Papers, 189--

Papers, written sometime after the events she remembered from 1848-1857 mostly, with brief notations from the Civil War period, 1893, and undated. Papers include memories of her girlhood, 1848-1857, on Beaver Island (Mich.)with her parents Peter and Ellen McKinley and younger sisters, Effie and Mary Eliza. She had very positive memories of the Ojibwa (Chippewa) Indians and great hatred for the Strangite Mormons who lived on the Island. The Mormons burned her father's house and property to the ground when the family had sailed to Mackinac Island on their way to Ohio, leaving the family with $1.50 in total assets. She detailed the political and physical fights between Mormons and non-Mormons, and noted the trial and murder of James Jesse Strang. She also included some history of the Ojibwa Indians.
